Talk Boost

Talk Boost is a specific education-based intervention for children with speech and language delays, developed by communication charity ICAN. It provides everything you need to carry out the intervention on a rolling basis within your school/organisation.

Course overview

Early Talk Boost has been designed for groups of 6-8 children. Early Talk Boost is a targeted intervention aimed at 3–4½ year old children with speech and language difficulties, who have missed out on these early communication opportunities the boost they need to catch up in their language development. Early Talk Boost has been designed to include parents in the intervention.

Who is the course for?

It is aimed at early years practitioners, including teachers, teaching assistants, and childcare professionals, to equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to support children’s communication development. The course focuses on boosting language skills through a variety of fun, interactive, and developmentally appropriate activities, enabling practitioners to create an engaging environment that encourages speech and language development.

Learning Aims

The aims of this course are to support children aged 3-4 in developing their speech, language, and communication skills, with a focus on vocabulary development, listening, and understanding. It also aims to encourage social interaction and build confidence in using language to express thoughts and ideas.

Course overview

Talk Boost KS1 is a language intervention for 4-7 year olds, delivered by a trained teaching assistant 3 times per week for 10 weeks, with linked whole class activities. It boosts the language and communication skills of children who have not had the opportunity to develop their language skills either through lack of good language models in their early years or because they are learning English for the first time.

Who is the course for?

This course is for teachers, teaching assistants, and other education professionals working with children aged 4 to 7 years in Key Stage 1 who have speech and language difficulties. It equips practitioners with effective strategies to support language development, enhance communication skills, and create an engaging classroom environment that fosters speech and language progress.

Learning Aims

The aims of this course are to support children aged 4-7 in Key Stage 1 with their speech, language, and communication skills. It focuses on improving vocabulary, listening, understanding, and social interaction, while also building confidence in using language to communicate effectively in the classroom.

Talk Boost KS2 is a targeted programme aimed at children 7-10 year old children who need help with talking and understanding words, aiming to boost their language skills helping them to catch up with their peers. The programme aims to accelerate children’s progress in language and communication after 8 weeks. The group is designed for up to 4 children run 3 times per week. 

Who is the course for?

This course is for teachers, teaching assistants, and other education professionals working with children aged 7 to 10 years who are experiencing speech and language difficulties. It provides practitioners with strategies to support communication skills, enhance language development, and promote academic progress in the classroom, creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Learning Aims

The aims of this course are to support children aged 7-10 in developing their speech, language, and communication skills. It focuses on developing vocabulary, improving listening and comprehension, and promoting effective communication for both social and academic success.

Talk for Work (formerly called Talk about Talk Secondary) is an evidenced targeted intervention that helps students aged 14 to 18 with difficulties in talking and understanding words to be ready for the workplace. It can be used in both secondary schools and Further Education colleges.

Who is the course for?

This course is for teachers, teaching assistants, and other professionals working with young people aged 14 to 18 who have communication needs. It provides practitioners with a comprehensive range of strategies designed to support the development of communication skills, improve social interactions, and facilitate learning. The course focuses on addressing specific challenges faced by young people in secondary school settings, equipping professionals with the tools to promote effective communication, build confidence, and support academic achievement while fostering positive relationships and social inclusion.

Learning Aims

The aims of this course are to support young people aged 14-18 in developing effective communication skills for the workplace and social environments. It focuses on improving their ability to express ideas clearly, engage in meaningful conversations, and build confidence in various communication contexts.
