Philippa Bowen

Speech and Language Therapist

About Philippa...

After completing a degree in Linguistics at Lancaster University, Philippa trained as a Speech and Language Therapist at Leeds Metropolitan University, graduating with a BSc (HONS) Clinical Language Sciences (Speech and Language Therapy) in 1992. She immediately embarked on a 30 year NHS career working with adults and children with a full range of communication and swallowing difficulties.

Philippa joined SpeechWise in July 2022, providing specialist SLT in a local primary school with a high level of SEN. She is passionate about providing a holistic approach where she works closely with parents and school staff, providing training and support where she can.

Philippa is committed to supporting children within their environments, advocating child-led approaches. She is driven by a passion to make a difference through removing barriers to effective communication.

When not working, Philippa is always outside, walking her dog or tending to her chickens and plants. She is a volunteer at the local Riding for the Disabled group, where she is able to share her love of horses with her experience in supporting neurodiverse riders and those with physical disabilities.

Philippa’s top tip for supporting children with speech and language difficulties is to work as a team, using consistent visuals wherever possible. Pictures, symbols and communication boards help children to understand new ideas and to process information more effectively, as well as providing visual ways to communicate, thus promoting independence.

Philippa is registered with the HCPC, RCSLT, and holds an Enhanced DBS check.
