What the Phonics?

A friendly guide for parents

Ever wondered what phonics actually is and what it has to do with helping your child learn to read? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! The word sounds fancy, but phonics is simply how children learn the sounds in words and match them to letters.

When children understand how sounds and letters work together, reading and spelling start to make sense – and even become fun!

 So, what is phonics?

Phonics teaches children to:

• Hear and recognise the sounds in words (for example, /s/, /a/, /t/).
• Match those sounds to the letters that spell them.
• Blend sounds together to read words like c-a-t = cat.
• Segment words into sounds to spell them out.

It’s all about building a bridge between spoken language and written words.

Why phonics matters

Phonics gives children powerful tools to:

• Sound out new words when they’re reading.
• Spell and write words more confidently.
• Connect talking, listening, and reading: three huge parts of language learning.

When children have strong phonics skills, they don’t just memorise words, they understand how words work.

Easy ways to help at home

You don’t need worksheets or apps – just everyday fun with sounds!

Listen for sounds: Play “I Spy,” spot rhyming words, or make up silly sound games.

Say sounds clearly: Keep them short and crisp – “s” not “suh,” “t” not “tuh.” It makes a big difference when your child starts blending sounds to read.

Read together: Point out letters, talk about the sounds they make, and let your child have a go at sounding out short words.

Have fun with words: Sing songs, read rhyming books, and play with nonsense words — it’s all brilliant for building sound awareness and confidence.

If your child finds sounds tricky…
